January 30, 2008 - Successful designs are often those that work well and are intuitive, and if something works well, we think little of it past its usability. But a bevy of designers and their associated companies were recently recognized for designs that exhibited excellence in innovation, form, materials, construction, concept, function, and utility.
Good Design Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies honored over 400 products and graphic designs for their "energy, vitality, and current innovation in global design". The awards are given in categories that span nearly all aspects of product design, from electronics to household goods to industrial equipment.
Laureates for 2007 included well-known design firms and manufacturers, such as Apple, Inc., 3M, Ford Motor Company, Herman Miller, and Liz Claiborne. Firms from Germany, the United States, and Italy brought home the most awards for product and graphic design, while firms from 30 other countries were also honored.
Winners ranged from the unsurprising -- Apple's iPhone and iPod, for example, to textiles from the German firm nya nordiska textiles GmbH.
The awards program has existed since 1950, and according to its website, is the world's oldest and "most celebrated awards program". The progam recognizes new and innovative product concepts.
The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design desires to advance public education about the value of "Good Design", and especially how design can "positively impact the human environment".
